Weekly Challenge #186 - Leaves

I struggled with this one. In my head, it's always awesome, but in execution it never turns out the same way. I thought to myself... everyone is going to tangle a maple leaf, but what if I tangle NOT the maple leaf... like it's punched out... except I couldn't figure out how to punch it out. FAIL. Oh well. In my mind, it's still awesome.

Patterns used: All About V, Cayle, Aura Lea, Peake Border, Onamato (favorite?) and Leaflet.

So I tried again and realized that Leaflet and Wud don't have any value contrast, so out come the colored pencils. Meh... it's all right, but I can't wait to see what the rest of you have done. Always so humbling.

Patterns Used: Leaflet, Wud

UPDATE: You commenters are the greatest. I'm always afraid too much shading makes my tangles muddy, but I have to admit your suggestions made a difference! I've still got a long way to go to get that "punch" that Hope Martin got on her leaf, but this is better.

Take two... with the NOT leaf outlined, and with more shading:

  1. I think it's a creative idea to NOT tangle the leaf! I like it.

  2. I like the not leaf! :) I struggled, too...yay for us for sticking with it, even though we aren't satisfied.

  3. Beautiful tiles. I like the way the maple leaf turned out. Thanks for thinking outside the box. The second tile is like looking at a wreath on the woodpile.

  4. Beautiful idea, the "not leaf" :)
I really like your question of "how to punch out the leaf?". It looks to me like an excellent gate to an exploration journey

  5. Was not a fail, was a creative and successful way to address this challenge. Your shading around the edge helped give it perspective. Maybe could have done it all the way around and make it darker on one edge.

  7. I agree that what I see in my head often doesn't make it to the page, but that doesn't mean that what does make it to the page is bad. It's just different from what you were expecting I like your tangling around the negative space. well done.

  9. I like the 1st one but I think the second has so much potential! I love that bottom leaf. If more of the others had more color and definition like it, and then add shading beside the wreath so it looked like it was above the wood. I'm sorry if I offended by implying something you thought was done needed something more, but I really think it could go from ...meh... To wow!
